Accredited Pressure Calibration and Training

Calibrating pressure gauges is essential for maintaining an efficient, reliable and safe process line. Pressure gauges need to be calibrated at predetermined intervals and a number of important considerations should be checked.

The time period between calibrations will be determined by the operator, industry standard is every 12 months but this could be more frequent based on how important the accuracy of reading needs to be. For example, site critical pressure gauges will be calibrated more frequently than non- critical gauges. Also, gauges used frequently and in harsh environments will be calibrated more frequently than those that are not. Gauges that have a history of losing accuracy will have to be calibrated more frequently, whilst gauges that maintain their accuracy may have the time scale between calibrations increased, but this will be outlined in any specific site manufacturing quality procedures.

Calibration Accuracy

To perform a pressure calibration, the device that is to be calibrated must have a more accurate device alongside it to perform the calibration. A useful method to employ is the four to one test uncertainty ratio (TUR) between the device under test accuracy and the reference standard accuracy. For example, a 100 psi pressure gauge with an accuracy of 1.0% full scale (FS) would have to have a reference standard with an accuracy of 0.25% full scale.

Before testing a pressure device you must first know the accuracy class of the device. Specifications are determined by the following standards:

  • ASM B40.00 for accuracy classes from 0.1 to 5% range
  • EN 837 for accuracy classes from 0.1 to 4% range

The accuracy class specification is the % of the range, so for example, if the accuracy class is 1% and the scale range is 0 to 100psi, the accuracy is ± 1 psi.

Calibration Certificate

Calibration can be performed either in a workshop on a test bench, in a laboratory, or in the field. To perform a calibration, all that is required is a regulated pressure source and the pressure standard. There may sometimes be a need to perform a calibration to an accredited standard, this will then have to be undertaken by an organisation that has been accredited by an accreditation body.

Budenberg are ISO9001:2015 accredited and are able to offer UKAS calibration through our third-party partner laboratory. A calibration certificate is always guaranteed to be in compliance with normative and legal requirements. If required, a comparable international standard can also be provided.

Calibration Training

As well as accreditations, Budenberg provide individually tailored training courses for their customers covering, but not limited to, the following areas:-

  • Gauge Calibration Training/Certification to meet the requirements of ISO 9001 and EN 837-1.
  • Dead Weight Tester operation and maintenance.

All courses are conducted by fully trained personnel and certificates of attendance/competence are issued (valid for one year) to all attendees. Budenberg can also offer in-house training for convenience. Alternatively, courses are regularly run at their premises for groups of up to four delegates. A first-class repair and recalibration service is also available for all of their products. The certification is traceable to National standards.

Recertification

All of Budenbergs instruments are delivered and calibrated with a Certificate of Conformity as standard. If an individual calibration certificate is required, this can be provided at an extra charge. Detailed Calibration Certificates are included free of charge for our range of Standard Test Gauges. UKAS calibration is also available.

United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory (NPL)

The United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory is the UK’s national measurement standards laboratory for developing and maintaining the primary measurement standards for metrology. Budenberg, under the compliance of the NPL which maintains the comparability with other national institutes, allows for highly accurate calibration under the UKAS accreditation. This allows for the calibration of measuring and testing equipment and also the measurement to national standards.

By using Budenbergs calibration services you will be increasing your process plants safety and efficiency.

Site Surveys

If you have a number of instruments that need to be tested, Budenberg offers a site survey service. This is useful for organisations that utilise many instruments on-site. Budenberg engineers can carry out a thorough site survey of all stocked instruments and produce a status report with recommendations such as Repair, Recalibrate or Replace. In some instances, a recommendation for different equipment under certain processes may be made in an effort to reduce emissions, improve life cycle, long term issues or reduce the cost of ownership.

Stores and Inventory Surveys

Sometimes instruments that you have in storage can go beyond their shelf life. It may also be the case that a spares item has been superseded and a more effective design has taken its place. In cases such as these, a store survey can be carried out by a Budenberg engineer, this is the best way to identify the items that require action such as repair or replacement. If instruments are found to be past their shelf life, an integrity test/recalibration service can be offered, if faulty or superseded, a repair and or direct equivalent for existing stock can be offered as part of the service. The stores and inventory survey provides a one-stop-shop for future needs and, in most cases, significant cost reductions.

Procedures Review

Technical assistance can also be offered to Budenberg customers by reviewing their current procedures for testing complex gauge assemblies. Sometimes a company's system of testing gauges may show errors - due to the test equipment being utilised. Budenberg engineers can visit your site and conduct detailed training based upon reliable and effective product testing processes and make recommendations to ensure that once in service the instrument is fit for purpose.
